Dr. Shahram Vaziri | Periodontist, PhD Oral Biology

Dear Patient,

You have just received one or more dental implants. These are precision titanium fixtures placed into your jaw to replace missing teeth. For best healing and implant success, please carefully follow the post-operative instructions below

1. Activity

– Rest the day of surgery.
– Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or bending over for at least 48-72 hours.
– Keep your head elevated, especially during sleep, to reduce swelling.

2. Bleeding

– Minor bleeding or pink saliva is expected during the first 24 hours.
– Bite gently on gauze for 30-60 minutes if bleeding persists.
– Avoid spitting or rinsing vigorously for the first 24 hours.

3. Swelling and Bruising

– Swelling may increase over 48-72 hours and is normal.
– Apply an ice pack (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to the outside      of your face over the surgical area for the first 24 hours.
– After 48 hours, switch to warm compresses

4. Pain Management

– Take prescribed pain medication as directed.
– Do not skip initial doses during the first 1-2 days.
– Avoid aspirin unless instructed.

5. Oral Hygiene

– Do not brush the surgical site for 7-10 days.
– Use the prescribed antimicrobial rinse gently starting 24 hours after surgery.
– Continue brushing and flossing the rest of your mouth carefully.

6. Diet

– Stick to soft, cool foods for the first few days.
– Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, hard, or acidic foods.
– Do not use a straw or drink carbonated beverages.
– Stay hydrated.

7. Bone Graft Material

– Do not disturb the surgical area with your tongue or fingers.
– Avoid pulling on your lip or cheek to inspect the site.
– A small metal post (healing abutment) may be visible; do not attempt to move it.

8. Sutures and Membranes

– Avoid smoking or vaping for at least 2 weeks-these habits can  lead to implant failure.
– Refrain from alcohol for 5-7 days, especially while taking antibiotics.

9. Smoking and Alcohol

– Sutures may dissolve on their own or be removed during your follow-up visit.
– If any loosen prematurely, contact the office.

10. Follow-Up

– Call our office if you experience:
– Persistent bleeding
– Swelling that worsens after 3 days
– Pus, foul odor, or taste
– Severe or increasing pain
– Fever over 101°F

11. Follow-Up

– Attend all follow-up visits as directed to monitor healing.
– If your implant is under a healing cap or buried, uncovering may occur at a later visit.
– Final restorations (crowns/bridges) are typically placed after 3-6 months.
