Laser Surgery Post Op Instructions
Potomac Periodontics and Implant Aesthetic Center
Dr. Shahram Vaziri | Periodontist, PhD Oral Biology
Dear Patient,
You have just undergone laser assisted periodontal and/or implant surgery. These procedures utilize laser energy for minimally invasive treatment, offering reduced bleeding, swelling, and faster healing. To ensure optimal recovery, please follow the instructions below carefully.
1. Activity
– Rest the day of surgery and avoid strenuous activity for 48-72 hours.
– Keep your head elevated while lying down to reduce swelling.
2. Bleeding
– Minimal bleeding is expected due to the laser’s cauterizing effect.
– If bleeding occurs, apply gentle pressure with gauze or a damp tea bag for 30 minutes
3. Swelling and Bruising
– Swelling is usually mild with laser procedures but may peak at 48 hours.
– Use ice packs (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) during the first 24 hours.
– Take all prescribed medications as directed.
4. Pain Management
– Some discomfort is expected, especially if deeper pockets or implants were treated.
– Take pain medications before the numbness wears off and continue as needed.
5. Oral Hygiene
– Do not brush or floss the treated area for at least 10 days.
– Use the prescribed antimicrobial rinse (e.g., Peridex) as directed, beginning 24 hours after surgery.
– Brush and floss other areas of the mouth as normal.
6. Diet
– Eat soft, cool foods for the first 3-5 days (e.g., smoothies, scrambled eggs, yogurt).
– Avoid spicy, crunchy, acidic, or hot foods and beverages.
– Do not use straws or drink carbonated beverages.
7. Bone Graft Material
– Treated areas may appear discolored or have a whitish layer-this is part of normal healing.
– Avoid touching the area with your tongue or fingers.
– Do not attempt to remove any clots or fibrin slough.
8. Sutures and Membranes
– Avoid applying pressure to the area with your tongue or chewing directly on the implant site.
– A healing abutment may be visible-do not attempt to manipulate it.
9. Smoking and Alcohol
– Avoid smoking and vaping for at least 2 weeks.
– Avoid alcohol for 5-7 days, especially while taking antibiotics.
10. Follow-Up Care
– Healing will be assessed at your follow-up appointment.
– Additional laser sessions or maintenance therapy may be recommended.
11. Contact Our Office If You Experience:
– Heavy or prolonged bleeding
– Swelling that increases after 3 days
