Osseous Surgery Post Op Instructions

Potomac Periodontics and Implant Aesthetic Center

Dr. Shahram Vaziri | Periodontist, PhD Oral Biology

Dear Patient,

You have just undergone periodontal osseous (bone) surgery. This procedure helps reduce pocket depths and eliminate bacterial buildup by reshaping the bone and surrounding tissue. Proper post-operative care is essential to healing and comfort. Please follow the instructions below carefully.

1. Activity

– Rest and limit activity on the day of surgery.
– Avoid vigorous exercise for at least 72 hours post-surgery.
– Keep your head elevated while resting to reduce swelling.

2. Bleeding

– Minor oozing or pink saliva is normal for 24-48 hours.
– If bleeding increases, apply light pressure with gauze or a damp       tea bag for 30 minutes.
– Avoid rinsing, spitting, or touching the surgical area.

3. Swelling

– Swelling is common and may peak at 48-72 hours.
– Apply an ice pack on the outside of your face near the surgical area for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off, for the first 24 hours.
– After 48 hours, warm compresses may help reduce residual swelling.

4. Pain Management

– Take all prescribed pain medications as directed.
– Do not skip doses the first 2 days to stay ahead of the pain.
– Avoid aspirin unless directed by your doctor.

5. Oral Hygiene

– Do not brush the surgical area for 10-14 days unless otherwise instructed.
– Use the prescribed antimicrobial rinse (e.g., Peridex) as directed.
– Continue brushing and flossing other areas of your mouth gently.
– Avoid electric toothbrushes near the surgical site

6. Diet

– Eat soft, cool foods for the first few days: yogurt, soup, eggs, smoothies, etc.
– Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or acidic foods.
– Do not drink through a straw. Avoid alcohol and smoking.

7. Sutures and Dressing

– You may have sutures and/or a periodontal dressing (“bandage”) placed.
– Do not disturb them. If they fall out prematurely, contact our office.
– Sutures may dissolve or be removed at your follow-up visit

8. Follow-Up

– Attend your scheduled post-op appointment, typically 7-10 days after surgery.
– Additional cleanings or maintenance therapy may be necessary to ensure long-term success

9. What to Watch For

– Please call our office if you notice:
– Persistent or heavy bleeding
– Excessive swelling beyond 3-4 days
– Severe or worsening pain
– Pus, foul taste or odor
– Fever over 101°F
