Dr. Shahram Vaziri | Periodontist, PhD Oral Biology

Dear Patient,

You have undergone a ridge augmentation and/or bone grafting procedure to restore missing bone in preparation for future dental implant placement. Proper care during the healing period is essential to protect the graft and ensure long-term success. Please read and follow these instructions carefully.

1. Activity

– Rest for the remainder of the day following surgery.
– Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting, or exercise for at least 3           days post-op.
– Keep your head elevated while resting or sleeping to reduce               swelling.

2. Bleeding

– Minor bleeding or pink saliva is normal for 24-48 hours.
– Apply gentle pressure with gauze to control bleeding if needed.
– If bleeding persists or increases, contact our office.

3. Swelling and Bruising

– Swelling and bruising are normal and may peak after 48-72 hours.
– Apply an ice pack on the outside of the face (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) during the first 24 hours.
– After 48 hours, switch to warm compresses to help reduce residual swelling.

4. Pain Management

– Take all prescribed medications as directed.
– Do not skip pain medications the first 48 hours.
– Avoid aspirin unless otherwise instructed

5. Oral Hygiene

– Do not brush the surgical area for 10-14 days or until advised.
– Use the prescribed antimicrobial rinse as directed starting 24            hours after surgery.
– Avoid rinsing vigorously, spitting, or using a straw

6. Diet

– Eat soft, cool foods such as yogurt, eggs, mashed potatoes, and smoothies.
– Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or acidic foods.
– Do not use a straw or drink carbonated beverages.
– Stay well hydrated

7. Bone Graft Material

– You may feel small particles or grains in your mouth-this is normal.
– Avoid disturbing the area with your tongue or fingers.
– Do not lift your lip or cheek to look at the site.

8. Sutures and Membranes

– Sutures may dissolve on their own or will be removed at your follow-up visit.
– If a membrane was placed, it may be visible and should not be disturbed.

9. Smoking and Alcohol

– Do not smoke or vape for at least 2 weeks-this can cause graft failure.
– Avoid alcohol for at least 5-7 days, especially while taking antibiotics.

10. Follow-Up

– Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments.
– Healing will be evaluated and additional instructions may be provided.
