Sinus Lift Post Op Updated Bleeding
Potomac Periodontics and Implant Aesthetic Center
Dr. Shahram Vaziri | Periodontist, PhD Oral Biology
Dear Patient,
Thank you for choosing us for your periodontal and implant care. Please follow these instructions carefully to ensure optimal healing and prevent complications following your sinus lift procedure
1. Activity and Positioning
– Rest quietly for the first 24 hours. Avoid strenuous activity for 7-10 days.
– Keep your head elevated (even during sleep) for 3-5 days to minimize swelling and sinus pressure.
– Avoid bending over or heavy lifting.
2. Bleeding
– Some oozing is normal for the first 24-48 hours. Bite on the gauze gently for 30-60 minutes if bleeding continues.
– It is possible to see blood coming from your nose on the same side that the sinus lift was done. This is because your nose is directly connected to your sinus. This should not concern you.
– Simply place a cotton roll Q-tip in your nose and apply pressure for 5-10 minutes. This should be done in an upright position (not lying down). Bleeding should stop shortly after.
3. Swelling and Bruising
– Swelling is expected and may peak at 48-72 hours.
– Apply ice packs (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to the cheek near the surgical area for the first 24 hours.
– After 48 hours, switch to warm compresses to promote circulation.
4. Medications
– Take prescribed antibiotics and pain medications exactly as directed.
– Use nasal sprays (if prescribed) to reduce inflammation and promote sinus drainage.
– Do not use over-the-counter decongestants unless advised
5. Oral Hygiene
– Do not brush the surgical area for the first week.
– You may gently rinse with the prescribed mouthwash or warm salt water after 48 hours. Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting.
– Continue regular brushing and flossing in other areas of the mouth.
6. Sinus Precautions
– Stick to soft, cool foods for the first few days.
– Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, hard, or acidic foods.
– Do not use a straw or drink carbonated beverages.
– Stay hydrated.
7. Diet
– Do not disturb the surgical area with your tongue or fingers.
– Avoid pulling on your lip or cheek to inspect the site.
– A small metal post (healing abutment) may be visible; do not attempt to move it.
8. Sutures and Follow-Up
– Avoid smoking or vaping for at least 2 weeks-these habits can lead to implant failure.
– Refrain from alcohol for 5-7 days, especially while taking antibiotics.
