Potomac Periodontics and Implant Aesthetic Center

Dr. Shahram Vaziri | Periodontist, PhD Oral Biology

Dear Patient,

You have just undergone a tooth extraction. In some cases, bone graft material may have also been placed into the socket to preserve the site for future implant placement. Following these instructions closely will help prevent complications and support healing.

1. Activity

– Rest quietly the day of surgery.
– Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting, or bending for 48-72 hours.
– Keep your head elevated when lying down to reduce swelling.

2. Bleeding

– Some bleeding or oozing is normal for up to 24 hours.
– Bite gently on gauze for 30-60 minutes to control bleeding.
– Replace gauze as needed, but do not keep changing it too        frequently

3. Swelling

– Swelling is common and may peak after 48-72 hours.
– Apply an ice pack (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) during the first 24 hours.
– After 48 hours, warm compresses may help reduce any remaining swelling

4. Pain Management

– Take all prescribed pain medications as directed.
– Begin pain medication before numbness wears off to stay ahead of discomfort.

5. Bone Graft Considerations (if placed)

– It is normal to feel small granules in your mouth.
– Avoid disturbing the surgical area with your tongue or fingers.
– Do not rinse or spit forcefully for the first 3-5 days.

6. Oral Hygiene

– Do not brush the extraction site for at least 7 days.
– Use the prescribed rinse gently beginning 24 hours after surgery.
– Brush and floss other areas of your mouth carefully.

7. Diet

– Stick to soft, cool foods like yogurt, soup, eggs, smoothies, and mashed potatoes.
– Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or hard foods for at least 5-7 days.
– Do not use a straw or drink carbonated beverages.

8. Smoking and Alcohol

– Avoid smoking or vaping for at  least 2 weeks-it significantly increases the risk of dry socket and graft failure.
– Avoid alcohol while taking antibiotics and for 5-7 days after surgery.

9. Sutures

– Sutures may dissolve on their own or may need removal at your follow-up visit.
– Do not pull on sutures with your tongue or fingers.

10. What to Watch For

– Contact our office immediately if you experience:
– Persistent or heavy bleeding
